One the consistent teachings of world religions is those with whom we have conflict, have something to teach us about ourselves and have an equal measure of the “divine” in them, as we might perceive we have in ourselves.
Marcus Aurelius, the 2nd Century Roman Emperor, once put it this way: “But I have seen the beauty of good, and the ugliness of evil, and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own—not of the same blood or birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine.”
In other words, the person standing intentionally in our way, the person who aggravates us, the one who seemingly has made themselves our enemy, that person – even if we don’t see it on the surface – does possess a similar “share of the divine.”
This insight can empower us to walk around the person who chooses to stand in our way, to release aggravation, and not take the bait to become ourselves an enemy.
