Desenrascanço is a Portuguese word that we love.
It means “disentanglement” in the sense of solving problems which arise that you didn’t anticipate and typically require using materials at hand to come up with a solution.
Meaning, no planning or foresight could have anticipated that problem suddenly appearing before you.
Portugal faces the ocean, and some speculate the word nods to how fishing nets can become entangled and require patience and often ingenuity to restore them to their original state.
Life can suddenly entangle us – at work, with family members and friends, or as we go about our daily tasks. Emotionally we can quickly become frustrated, irritated and even angry when we feel entangled. But those kinds of emotions make it harder to untangle the net, not easier.
Maybe add the idea this word represents to your emotional vocabulary?
The next time you feel entangled, desenrascanço?
