We love movies when the hero is in a predicament and the audience can’t imagine how she or he will survive.
In his book, The Creative Act, Rick Rubin observes how life can mirror the movies, or perhaps a better way to perceive it is that movies can imitate life.
Rubin then makes this wonderful observation. He writes when we find ourselves in a situation we didn’t expect – a sudden death in our family, we receive bad health news, a seemingly insurmountable problem arises – we can retreat and fold into ourselves, or we can say, “I wasn’t expecting that plot twist. I wonder what’s going to happen to our hero next.”
Because here’s the thing – the hero is you.
And once we realize we are the hero in our own story then we can discern, as Rubin writes, “There’s always a next scene, and that next scene may be one of great beauty and fulfillment.”
