Into Our Own Hands

We could all use encouragement, but what happens when there is no one around to encourage us?

Last week as I was scrolling through Instagram, I came across a Reel of a little girl pushing her father down a sliding board. When she sat down to take her turn, she paused and reached her hands behind her back. Then she gave herself a little push and down the slide she went.

Sometimes when there’s no one around to give us a push – to offer a word of encouragement or a nudge in the right direction – we need to take it into our own hands. (For our email subscribers you’ll find a photo of the girl at on-emotions.com.)

The word “encouragement” comes from the 15th century French word encoragier, and is the combination of en “make, put in” and “courage.”

What choice in your life needs you to “put in” some “courage”? What gentle push in the back do you need to give yourself to swoop down the slide?
