My 7 year old nephew bought a mood ring yesterday in a toy store on a family vacation.
In the 1970s they were a popular form of jewelry that changed colors as liquid crystals close to our skin sensed fluctuations in our body temperature and moved to catch the light in different ways. Each changing color was supposed to signify a mood we were feeling: Amber, for example, meant we were nervous, violet passionate, green calm.
My nephew was most interested what color meant that he was feeling “angry.” Why? My best guess is this was a feeling he was taught to watch for and avoid in school.
How we become aware of what we are feeling is a fascinating question. Some of us can immediately put a name to our moods. Others have to write it down or meditate to access their feelings. A few of us have no idea how we are feeling at any particular moment.
How do you ring your moods?
