Permission to Feel

“Give yourself permission to write one song,” encourages Jeff Tweedy in his book How to Write One Song.

Everything difficult, frightening, and new is on the other side of permission.

Emotions are on the other side of giving yourself permission to feel.

After we’ve experienced trauma, disappointment, sorrow, pain, we often shut down our emotions in order to not feel that emotion anymore.

There is a word for this state of being, it is called anhedonia. It means to not be able to feel pleasure. Think of it as being numb.

Permission is how we step out and away from anhedonia.
Permission to write our first song.
Permission to feel.
